Competition Rules
1. Monthly competitions will be held in the following categories, all
images may be digital,
home or commercial lab processed.
PRINTS: DIGITAL SUBMISSION:
Monochrome Salon Prints “Group A & B” Open Category “Group A & B”
Color Salon Prints “Group A & B” Special Category “Group A & B”
Snapshots “Group B”
Image Artistry “Group A & B”
See Rule 9 for definition of groups.
2. Dues must be paid before entering competition.
3. Two or more contestants comprise a competition. If there are only two
competitors in any category, then only first and second place will be
awarded.
4. Members unable to attend a competition may leave their entries at a
prior meeting or have someone bring them
to the competition. There will be (1) make-up allowed per member per
year (2 entries per category). Make-up
entries must be presented at the APRIL competition. This will be in
addition to your regular APRIL entries.
Make-ups count for total score but are not eligible for ribbons.
Make-ups must be clearly marked as “makeup”.
5. An entrant may submit up to 2 entries in any category in monthly
competitions. ALL entries must be titled. They must have the Date;
Maker’s Name, Category, Group A or B and have an arrow to indicate the
proper orientation. The information must be put on the back of the print
in the upper left hand corner. The same image cannot be entered
in more than one category on the same competition night. Once an image
wins a ribbon it cannot be used again.
6. Members should refrain from entering similar images (same subject)
without substantial change in that image. This rule expresses the intent
of encouraging people to photograph a wide variety of topics employing
creativity to make images appear different from another.
7. All monthly competitions will be decided by a panel of three (3)
judges, instructed to score on a 5 to 10 point basis. The scores are
then tallied, making 30 a perfect score.. First, second and third places
will be awarded in each category, unless there are only two contestants.
Ties will not be broken. The two entries for each maker will be recorded
and accumulate toward a year end total. (See rule 3)
8. Images in any category cannot be submitted more than twice in any
competition year. Once an entry receives an award, 1st, 2nd, or 3rd, it
cannot be entered in any regular club competition again. Critiques of
images are encouraged. Please limit one critique per category per maker,
per competition.
9. With the exception of snapshots, all categories will be divided into
two groups A and B except for the end of the year special awards (see
rule 23) these will be judged as one group in each category. Group A
will be for the more
advanced photographers and the B group will be for the less experienced
and beginners. When entering images,
cropping, exposure adjustments and removal of objects are permitted.
Nothing can be added to the image that
wasn’t in the original image. Highly manipulated images must be entered
in Image Artistry. (see rule 18).
10. All competitors will compete within their own group. (A group with
A) and (B group with B) except for the end
of the year special awards (see rule 23).
11. A member may not transfer between groups during any competition
year. At the close of the season, the Executive Committee may recommend,
or the maker may request, reclassification based on the members
performance during the season. A member may go up or down in a class.
The top maker in group “B” should be promoted to group “A”.
12. The “Special Category” will be for digital projected images only.
They will be judged on a 5 to 10 point basis awarding 1st, 2nd, or 3rd.
Special Category subjects will be announced at the beginning of the
competition year. Any winning entries in any Castle Craig regular
competition are not eligible for the Special Category. (See rule 8)
Digital
13. Photographs must be submitted with the .jpg extension.
14. All projected photographs must be sized to 1024 pixels in the
horizontal direction and 768 pixels in the vertical direction. Photos
must fit within those dimensions. It is suggested that images be
submitted well in advance of the due date so that any sizing issues can
be resolved.
15. Naming Convention: In order to provide all of the information need
and to allow the use of automated tools, image files must be named as
follows:
GroupCategoryandNumber$LastNameFirstInitial$Title$Year-Month.jpg
Where Group is (A, B) Category is (O or S) (for open or special
category) “Number” is the sequence number for the
competition (1 or 2), “LastName” is the last name of the maker,
“FirstInitial” is the first initial of the maker’s first
name, “Title” is the photograph’s title without spaces (Capitalize the
first letter in each word of the title), and
“Year-Month” is the competition being entered in the format “2010-09”
for September 2010. It is suggested that
normal capitalization rules be followed for the last name, first name,
and title. The dollar signs are used to separate the fields of
information. An example file name formatted correctly is:
AO1$DionneJ$PinkFuchsia$2010-09.jpg This is Jim Dionne’s first
photograph for group ‘A’ in the open category titled “Pink Fuchsia”
entered into the September 2010 competition.
Prints
16. On the reverse side of each print, this will include Snapshots,
Image Artistry, Monochrome Salon and Color Salon. All must have a title,
the maker's name with an arrow indicating the top of the print, group
entering (A or B) and
category entered, date, also a “C” if you want a critique. Put
information in upper left hand corner on back of
print.
17. Salon Prints, Monochrome and Color any size image up to 16” x 20”
will be allowed. All salon prints must
be mounted or matted, but no frames will be allowed. No mount or matting
smaller than 8” x 10” or larger
than 16” x 20”.
18. The Image Artistry category will include any and all alternative
processes. These will be prints mounted or matted any size up to 16” x
20”, Monochrome or Color. They will be shown through the light box and
scored on a 5 to 10 point
basis. An explanatory statement about this category will be read aloud
to the judges before the entries are viewed. On the integrity of the
person entering all highly manipulated images will be entered in the
Image Artistry Category (See rule 9 ).
19. Group “B” snapshots will be shown and judged in the light box one at
a time. Scoring will be on a 5 to 10 point
basis. Snapshot size shall be 3 1/2”x 5”, 4” x 6” or standard panoramic,
unmounted, Monochrome or Color.
20. In Monochrome Salon only, the use of more than a single color in
toning, (ex. Sepia toning), dying or
painting either completely or selectively of the print is prohibited.
21. There will be no end of year judging for the Special Category .
However any Image entered In the Special
Category over the course of the year CAN BE ENTERED in the general
Category for the end of the year judging.
22. In the End of Year (EOY) competition, you may enter up to five (5)
Images of your choice in each
category. The images must have been entered in competition during the
club year. Entries must be
presented as they were when entered into competition. Mat and mount must
remain the same, no
additional retouching or montageing is permitted. All entries must be
submitted at the last competition
April prior to the final judging In May. The awards will be: 1st , 2nd ,
and (3) HM’s. Ties will be broken.
Two or more contestants comprise a competition. If there are only two
competitors in any category,
then only first and second place will be awarded.
23. In addition to the regular end-of-year competition, we compete for
the following awards. You may have one
entry per category which has NEVER been entered before. Open to all
members (These will be judged as
one group in each category.)
1. The Willis Cone Wildflower Medal
One entry per person in digital. Entry can never have been entered in
any contest before.
2. The Everett Wilson landscape Medal
One entry per person in digital. Entry can never have been entered in
any contest before.
3. The Paul Hanson B & W Medal
One entry per person in prints. Must be monochrome or one color, i.e.
Sepia tone. Entry can never have been entered in any contest before.
4. The Daniel Kahn Creativity Medal
One entry per person, salon prints only. Entry can never have been
entered in any contest before. Entries can
be B&W or color and can include such things as hand-colored B&W images;
black light set ups, Mylar, collages
or any other type of creative image that is typically entered in our
Image artistry Category. Open to all members
(Judged as one group)
